Gujarat eats more oil than almost anywhere else in India — here’s what that means for lunch

Gujarat is one of the most oil-heavy states in the country. A survey on Indian eating habits put it among the top four states for fat and oil consumption, and a study of Gujarati households found that people who ate deep-fried food daily were far more likely to be obese than those who didn’t — not a small difference, a large one. This isn’t a guess about “Indian food” in general. It’s specifically about how Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar eat, backed by research on exactly this population.

Against that background, a salad bowl isn’t a diet fad. It’s one of the few lunch options that doesn’t add to a problem the research already shows is real here.

Why a bowl, specifically

A salad bowl chopped fresh that day, with a real protein and a proper dressing, is filling in a way a plate of fried snacks only feels like it is. It doesn’t carry the oil load that the research keeps flagging in Gujarati diets, and it doesn’t leave you reaching for something at 4pm because lunch didn’t actually hold you.

This is already normal lunch elsewhere

In plenty of office districts outside India, a salad bowl at lunch isn’t a health statement, it’s just what people eat. Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar don’t have to wait for that to become normal here — it’s already something you can order today.

See today’s bowls and swap out tomorrow’s lunch: order a salad bowl.
