Why more people are skipping the daily cook

Why more people are skipping the daily cook

In cities that are ahead on this, the home-cooked daily lunch is already old news. Salad bars are a normal lunch stop, not a novelty. Ready-to-heat meals sit in a regular grocery aisle, not a specialty shelf. And in plenty of countries, a parent hasn’t made a school lunch from scratch in years — the school, or a kitchen, sends one.

Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar are still catching up to this. That’s not a criticism — it’s just where we are on the timeline. The question is how long “still catching up” lasts.

A school lunch you didn’t have to cook

Somewhere else, a parent reading this already stopped cooking school lunch at 6am. Here, most still do it — late at night or half-asleep in the morning — simply because nobody’s shown them the alternative is already normal elsewhere.

A salad bowl instead of a repeated lunch

The same lunchbox or the same fried snack, every day at the desk, isn’t a habit — it’s just what happens when nothing better is easy. A fresh bowl, chopped that day and delivered to work, is the easy option in a lot of cities already.

A 2-minute meal instead of no time at all

“No time to cook” isn’t a reason to skip a proper meal anymore, not where this has caught on. It’s a reason to have one delivered ready, heated in two minutes.

We built Leafy so Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar don’t have to wait for this trend to arrive on its own. It’s already here — see today’s school meals or today’s salad bowls and try it for yourself.
